Guerrero Ceramic Water Pot
Circa 1920, Mexico
Typical of Mexican regions with hot climates, water coolers were a principal ceramic product till the early 20th century. So that the coolers properly fulfilled their function, the clay would only be smoothed and burnished, not glazed. This would allow for efficient water absorption by the walls of the clay vessel which in turn would keep the water cool. Storing the vessels halfway in the damp earth would amplify the cooling effect.
Painted in the typical style of Guerrero decorative pottery, its fading patina is a natural effect of its past consistent use underground, and the solidified dirt was kept for aesthetic purposes by Chic by Accident.
